Smaller is Larger

With a background in structure, I am drawn occasionally again to fractal designs -- especially when color is involved.  Our  first created ones were yellow dots on black background which took overnight to run (gone are the days of slow computers and Dos commands).  Mathematical-digital drawing has been carried to such an extreme now that it is hard to see the natural self-similarity of the designs  and I am not convinced that many are true fractals; but I donot pretend to grasp all of the edges of this stuff.

This presentation is a nice history with current developments

It is thought that organic development of  natural live structures: trees, branches, leaves and roots ;  and the  geologic structures: craggy mountains, seashore outlines from above,  and lakeshores moved by wave action,
may be influenced by the fractal development, which is the larger is just a reproduction of the smaller, grown.

Here is a better example.   This is s a closeup of some kind of mold development.  Ugh, probably looks better smaller.!

  1. I don't know what to say, other than that's quite wonderful...exquisite. I wouldn't know where to begin in creating something like that. So it's better I be a bystander and just enjoy.

  4. I had only heard the word fractal design a few days ago while looking at apps for photography. Just clicked on your link and started watching. I am so facinated by the show and what it has to say. But it is coming on 1pm and I really have to hit the hay, but will watch another time. Thanks for sharing something so intriging. Also thanks for you advise with my neighbor. I pray all goes well with you.

  6. Fascinating!!! Saw a science program on Chaos Theory ad fractals once. Blew my mind, in fact I really need to see it again because much of the information went WAY over my head.

  7. I really do love the last photo here can't stop trying to decifer it. Well my friend with cancer has passed on. I appreaciate your advise you had given me. I do hope all is going well with you. Summer is over to quickly and time is now racing by. I realized 10 years of my life had just passed I have no real memory of it. I lived in a haze for awhile, but purpose and clarity are coming back again. Wishing you wonderful autumn filled with those colors that can brighten even a dull day.
